I’m finally getting around to going thru the Reptile Relief lesson in Kickstart and when I open the file in Vetric all I see is the profile toolpath and no crocodile. The only file I can open in Vetric from the 3 files you get in the lesson is the M7-Crocidile.crv file.

    Hey Jason,

Thanks for reaching out! Glad to hear you’re diving into the Reptile Relief project!

I can see how that would be confusing, especially when you’re expecting to see the crocodile model and only getting the profile toolpath.

The Reptile Relief project uses a 3D crocodile model along with separate roughing and finishing toolpaths.

Here’s what I’d recommend checking first:

    • Make sure you’ve downloaded the complete project ZIP folder from the Reptile Relief lesson and extracted all the files before opening anything in Vectric.

    • Open the M7-Crocidile.crv file and check whether the 3D model is visible in the 3D view.

    • The project requires Vectric VCarve or higher, so make sure you’re using a compatible version.

You can also go back through the Reptile Relief lesson and follow the setup steps in the project playbook.

If the crocodile model is still missing after those checks, let us know. We can help determine whether there’s an issue with the course download.

Give that a shot and let us know how it goes.

I did not see a zip file. Only individual files. The only individual file I could open in VCarve Desktop was the highlighted one and I still get the same result. However, I was able to import the STL and I can see the croc now. But I will need to setup the toolpaths. I think the playbook has basic settings. I’ll see what I can do with the STL for now.

So in setting up the STL toolpaths I’m getting some very long cutting times. 7-1/2 hours for roughing and 4-1/2 for finishing. It appears the roughing pass preview looks almost like the finished pass. It doesn’t look like your video shows. Sidenote: I tried opening the Carbide file in the Carbide software and I get the same issue of no croc only the profile outline.

The finishing pass can take several hours, so longer cutting times aren’t necessarily unusual. However, if your roughing preview looks almost identical to the finished carving, I’d recommend going back through the toolpath setup in the Reptile Relief project lesson.

Here are a few things to double-check against the lesson:

    • Roughing bit: 1/4″ endmill

    • Finishing bit: 1/8″ ball nose

    • Material thickness: 1.25″ (adjust to your actual board)

    • Project size: 4.75″ x 16″

    • Z-zero: Top of material

Once you’ve reviewed those settings, recalculate both toolpaths and run the simulation again before cutting any material.

As for the Carbide Create file only showing the crocodile’s outer profile, that sounds like something specific to how the 3D model is being displayed or handled in Carbide Create. I’d recommend reaching out to Carbide 3D’s support team for help with that part.
